Descending Averof Street and reaching the area of Molos, one encounters Lake Pamvotida, or Lake Kyra-Frosini, which is a jewel for the city of Ioannina and is said to be 20,000 years old.
All the life of the city revolves around it and the walks by the water are an integral part of the life of the inhabitants. About in the middle of the Lake is a small island which has been associated with the history and death of Ali Pasha.
In fact, from the lake start boats that make trips to and from the island every half hour in summer and every hour in winter, for those who want to enjoy a walk in the narrow streets with traditional architecture, to try the famous frog legs and visit the Museum of Ali Pasha, which is housed in the monastery of Agios Panteleimon.
The castle of Ioannina is built at the southeastern end of the city, on the small rocky peninsula that penetrates into Lake Pamvotida. It has a perimeter of about 2000 meters, encloses an area of 200 acres, while the gate is located on the axis of the main highway of the city. As one enters through the gate, one sees on his left a portico that functions as an exhibition space.
Further in, at two elevated points, there are two citadels. In one is the Aslan Mosque and in the other the Its Kale, where remnants of the Norman fortification are preserved and the Fethiye Mosque is housed.
In Its Kale it is worth making a stop for a coffee, overlooking the lake, and then continue your walk to the castle, to get to know its history and observe the special architecture of the houses built on it.
Perama Cave of Ioannina is one of the most beautiful caves in the world and is only 4 km from the city of Ioannina. It is a three-storey palace, with incomparable beauties, created by nature in the bowels of Goritsa Hill and lists 19 species of stalactites and stalagmites.
Every visitor has the opportunity to be guided to the exhibition of paleontological exhibits and fossils and if they wish to watch a documentary on the history of the Caves. In addition, he can continue his tour with the "Tourist Train" and the guides that the Cave has. At the exit of the Cave, the visitor has the opportunity to enjoy the view of both the city of Ioannina and the magnificent lake.
Ioannina is one of the largest cities in Greece, with a rich history and cultural tradition, which is "kept" in various museums of the city that are worth visiting.
Some of the most famous museums are the Museum of Silversmithing, which is located in the castle of Ioannina, and the Museum of Greek History, Pavlos Vrellis, also known as the Museum of Wax Figures, which has been operating since 1995.
During your walk in the city, do not forget to visit the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina, in the city center, and of course the Museum of Ali Pasha and the Revolutionary Period, which adorns the island of Ioannina and receives a large number of visitors at any time of year.
Vikos gorge is one of the most important attractions of the wider area of Zagori in Epirus and is located 30 km northwest of Ioannina. It is one of the most impressive gorges in the world, since it is the deepest in proportion to its width and that is why it holds a first place in the Guinness Book of Records.
The gorge of Vikos is crossed by a torrent, which at the exit of the gorge becomes the impressive river Voidomatis, with its crystal clear and clear waters. This is a geographically isolated area in which no kind of human activity related to livestock and logging is allowed. This combination helped to develop a large and special biodiversity, while creating a paradise, literally, for many rare and endangered species.
The tour lasts about 6 hours, but the special beauty of the gorge and its imposing form, manage to enchant even the most demanding visitor.
